Write your troubles on a slip of paper and burn it.

Now make a list of what you want to do next year.

My plan was to pack a bag and head for Cape Cod. When I imagined going there, I could taste the blueberries that grew at the edge of the woods. I could see blackbirds in the trees, lily pads in the pond, sea lavender in the marsh.

Your favorite beach town will be waiting for you next year. As the darkness sifts down, you will catch fireflies in a glass. You will go to brunch every morning even if it isn’t Sunday and order French toast, even though you swore off carbohydrates five years ago. Imagine yourself on a screened-in porch next summer, drinking iced tea. Collect shells, fall in love, read ten novels in a row.

In October you’ll see the leaves change. Collect the ones in the shape of stars, go to Vermont, buy maple syrup and pots of chrysanthemums. When December arrives, you’ll take your mother or your niece to see the Rockettes in the Radio City Christmas Spectacular. You’ll watch snow fall in Paris or in your hometown. Make a list, check it twice, you still have plenty to do.
